Tsugaru-jamisen Concert at Dairyuji, April 16th

We are hosting a live Tsugaru-jamisen (shamisen) concert at Dairyuji on Sunday, April 16th, along with a screening of a documentary regarding one of the most famous shamisen musicians. The director will join us to add commentary and answer any questions.

Tsugaru Jamisen is unique to the Tohoku region, specifically Aomori prefecture just north of Akita. Traditionally, many players were blind including Takahashi Chikuzan, one of preeminent Tsugauru-jaminsen performers and composers in Japan.

After his death, his disciple adopted his name and continues to perform in this style. We are very honored and excited to have her perform at Dairyuji!!

Scroll down to find a youtube clip for the documentary trailer to get a sense of the amazing culture and sound of tsugaru-jamisen. Shamisen is a three string guitar like instrument.
